HomeMade Soft Scrub Cleaners

These homemade softscrubs are simple to make, won't scratch surfaces and will allow you to clean your kitchen and bathrooms without bleach, ammonia or other harmful chemicals. The ingredients are baking soda, salt, castile liquid soap, essential oils, and vinegar. The baking soda is for making a scrubbing paste with the castile liquid soap and provides mild abrasive cleaning power. Castile liquid soap cleans and disinfects. Salt can be added for extra scrubbing power. Vinegar can be added for cutting grease and dissolving soap scum. Essential oils provide a pleasant scent along with additional antibacterial and disinfectant cleaning qualities.

Super Simple Soft Scrub Cleaner

Using just two basic ingredients and requiring minimal preparation, this recipe will still work wonders in your kitchen or bathroom. The quantities listed here are small so you can try it out by making a small batch for testing purposes. I like to make just enough for the cleaning purpose at hand and make a new batch as needed.

Pour the baking soda into a bowl. Add the Castile liquid soap and mix with a fork until the mixture is smooth and creamy like mashed potatoes or cake frosting. After you have made this recipe a few times, you'll be able to make the mix without measuring. The amounts don't have to be exact. You can add baking soda for a thicker paste and you can add a bit of water to dilute.

I usually scoop out some cleaner with my scrubby sponge and start cleaning. After scrubbing, rinse and wipe clean with a dry cloth. To clean surfaces with hard water spots or soap scum, spray a mixture of 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar on the surface before scrubbing.

Extra Scouring Power Soft Scrub Cleaner

This recipe adds more scouring power with the addition of plain table salt as a mild abrasive. A bit of tea tree or lemon oil gives it a boost of disinfectant cleaning along with a nice scent.

Add the baking soda and Castile liquid soap together in a bowl and mix with a fork until the paste is smooth and creamy. Add the salt and mix well. Add the essential oil.

Scoop out some of the cleaner with your scrubbing sponge and scour the area to be cleaned. For stronger scouring action, pour a bit of salt directly on the area to be cleaned and scrub. (This is the way I do it most of the time.)

For cleaning soap scum and hard water mineral deposits, use a 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar mix in a spray bottle and spray the area with this mixture before scrubbing. Vinegar is slightly acetic and will help dissolve and neutralize the soap scum and mineral deposits.
